Strollers Walking Group
Information & Objectives
This group has been meeting for over 20 years and continues to grow based on a relaxed common objective to explore whilst enjoying each other’s company.
Our walks, generally attended by 15-25 members and friends, are led by a variety of our members and friends who provide a diverse range of geographic and historic information.
Attendees meet at Upper Chapel at 10am on the date of the monthly Saturday departure or alternatively at a pre-determined starting point given by the walk leader for the specific walk (usually at about 11am dependant on location). Return transport from the Chapel to the starting point is generally available but is subject to advanced notice being provided so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
We continue to encourage other members of the local congregations, friends, acquaintances or other interested parties to join us on our gentle walks which are normally designed to avoid difficult, very steep walking conditions and may be centred on an area of historic, engineering (including railway infrastructure) or architectural interest. We are increasingly making provision for our less mobile attendees to have a base in the area of the walk to enable them to limit their walking distance as required.
These walks usually last about 3 to 4 hours (2 to 4 miles) punctuated with a packed lunch in a carefully chosen location. We usually return to Sheffield in mid to late afternoon
As an example the 2018 Strollers’ monthly programme included the walks centred on the following locations:
- Clifton Park, Rotherham
- Manor Fields Park, Sheffield
- Mindfulness Walk in Fulwood
- Upper Don Valley near Wortley
- Malcoff, Chapel-en-le-Frith, The Wash to the Bugworth Canal Basin)
- The Bill Emmingham Youlgreave Walk
- Wentworth Woodhouse Estate
- Calver to Eyam
- Roche Abbey
- Norton/Gleadless Valley
Our summer evening dining event was enjoyed at the Dore Grill in mid- June (24 attendees).
The 2018 UC Strollers programme culminated in our Christmas lunch at the Whitely Hall Hotel in Grenoside (35 attendees)
Please now refer to our 2020 programme below and note that a Strollers bulletin is issued by email 7-14 days before each walk providing specific details of the forthcoming event.
